Phillip Kennedy Johnson is a musician and writer living in the Washington, DC/Baltimore region. He is the creator of the comic series Smoketown, Warlords of Appalachia, Last Sons of America, and the webcomic The Lost Boys of the U-Boat Bremen. His most recent work is Kong: Gods of Skull Island and the ongoing The Power of the Dark Crystal with BOOM! Studios, Smoketown with Scout Comics, and Aquaman Annual #1 with DC Comics. He has also written for Adventure Time Comics and the BAND! cartoon strip for Musicomic.com. His articles have been published by ComicBookResources.com, the internet’s leading comic magazine, and The International Trumpet Guild Journal.
Outside of writing, Johnson has a full-time career as a trumpet player, composer, arranger and teacher. As a Sergeant First Class in the United States Army, he regularly tours the United States with The U.S. Army Field Band and the Federal Brass of Washington, DC. Prior to joining the Army Field Band, he toured the world with the Glenn Miller Orchestra. He has also performed with the Moscow Ballet, the Dallas Opera, Washington Symphonic Brass, the Lexington Philharmonic, and the Benny Goodman Orchestra. He earned a Master of Music degree from the University of North Texas, where he served as Teaching Fellow for the Department of Jazz Studies, and a Bachelor of Music degree from Eastern Kentucky University.
Johnson is a student of American art forms, especially jazz, comic books, and mixed martial arts. He will fight anyone who argues that MMA came from Brazil.
